Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the International Women’s Day Lunch hosted by Women in Super, featuring the inspiring Robin Penty, CEO of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF).
Robyn’s heartfelt speech resonated deeply with the room, shedding light on the critical importance of understanding not just the ‘what’ but the profound ‘why’ behind her dedication to ovarian cancer research.
Ovarian cancer remains a formidable challenge, with survival rates that have seen minimal improvement over the past two decades. In Australia, the five-year relative survival rate for ovarian cancer is approximately 48%
This rate is significantly lower compared to other cancers; for instance, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of 92%
Alarmingly, around half of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at advanced stages (stages 3 and 4), where the five-year survival rate can be as low as 16%
Robyn’s commitment to advancing research and raising awareness is crucial in changing these statistics. Her willingness to seize opportunities, like speaking at this event on short notice, exemplifies her dedication to the cause. Being in the presence of someone so passionately driven by their ‘why’ was both humbling and motivating.
Let’s join hands in supporting the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation and all initiatives aimed at early detection and improved treatments. Together, we can strive for a future where ovarian cancer no longer poses such a grave threat to women’s health.
A massive thank you to Zara Lawless – CEO of Mother’s Day Classic Foundation and Jo Kowalczyk – CEO of Women in Super for the invite.
